For some reason when I set an alarm I sleep like crap so I turned it off and slept past the ferry time. It ended up being ok and saved me $35. First I went to see the Patriots Point Naval Museum where the aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown, and the destroyer, USS Laffey, were parked. They also had a Cobra and Heuy helicopters.
After the museum I parked at Battery Park and walking the city. I went up on the shore side then back through downtown. Downtown Charleston has a ton of houses and building from the early 1900’s. There is a specific type of house, the Charleston Single House. These are long, narrow houses with most of them having a three level porch on the South side. These houses are all over the downtown residential area and the ones that are for sale cost between four and six million. On a lot of the houses there were plaques with history of the house on them like in other old cities I’ve been to. Charleston and Mt Pleasant are very expensive cities to live in. Houses start around $300k and a one bed apartment goes for around $1500 a month. The jobs don’t look like they really pay more either.
Instead of going to the fort I went to the Fort Sumter National Monument instead. They had a few exhibits from the civil war era and the original garrison flag from the fort.
After the museum I went to the shops area of downtown. This area was very hipster and had all the clothing shops. I stopped at Chucktown Brewery for a refreshment and continued to Market St.
I wanted to go to Charleston City Market, but I guess they close before 5PM. I got to walk around it and look into some of the shops. Once I hit the end of downtown I went over to Meeting Street and found a bunch of kids dressed up running around outside of the South Carolina Society building. Another guy walking near me asked on of the kids and we found out they were having a actual cotillion. I didn’t know these things actually happened anymore. A little further down the road I found the largest privately owned residence in Charleston, the Calhoun Mansion. It’s like a single house but three wide.
I got back to the van around 6PM and decided to take off for Savannah, GA.
