10/15/2024 – The MET Part 1
Today was my first real day in New York City. I spent the entire day exploring the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the MET. This is one of the most amazing museums in the country and one of only two so far that I needed two days to finish. It’s kind of expensive at $30 per day, but it’s well worth it. I managed to sneak in the second day through the gift shop. I wasn’t sure what kind of museum it was. I thought it might just be paintings, but it’s so much more.
I started in the Greek wing. There were some cool sculptures and pottery here. There was a special exhibit in this wing, a bunch of Tiffany jewelry and silver. These are the pics with the purple background and the silver.
Next was the Egyptian wing. This was really interesting for me. They had mummies, sarcophagi, statues, art, recreations of burial chambers, an entire temple, and jewelry. The temple was gifted to Teddy Roosevelt, disassembled, had a room built, and reassembled in the room. One of the coolest things was that they had an entire book of the dead.
The next area on the first floor was the North American and central atrium sections. This area was smaller than most of the other exhibits. The highlights were the painted panorama of the palace and grounds of The Palace of Versailles, and the recreation of a Frank Lloyd Wright house.
The armor and weaponry area was next and one of the most interesting. They had medieval armor, firearms owned by royalty, a super rare elephant tusk spear, infantry weapons, and samurai swords.
Next was the medieval and English art.
The last area on the main floor was the sculpture hall. It’s amazing how people can cut marble to make it so lifelike. in a hallway at the end there was a little exhibit of Faberge eggs and other items.
