I spent my day today at Yellowstone National Park. I got to see the Northwest part this time. The last time I was through here I came up from the South and missed the NW section. If you wanted to go to one place that has all of the features of the national parks I would recommend Yellowstone. It has mountains, geysers, waterfalls, forests, wildlife, plains, rivers, lakes, pretty much everything except an ocean.
I started at the Fountain Paint Pots. These are acidic springs that dissolve the rock to make mud. There were a few geysers here too (pictures below). Next was The Grand Prismatic Lake. I hiked about .75 miles out to the overlook to see it. It was so worth it, one of the prettiest lakes. The final stop on my way south was Old Faithful. Before I got to it, I looked online to see when it erupted and I saw that I would miss it. I figured I would still go check it out. I didn’t know it go off about every hour. I was able to watch a couple of the movies they had playing in the visitors center before going outside to watch it.
I started heading back North toward Mammoth Hot Springs next. The springs were pretty and there was a really cool rock formation that you have to drive through. Everything in Fort Yellowstone and the town was closed by the time I got there. I was hoping to get a 150th anniversary sticker, but I couldn’t find any at any of the visitors centers or gift shops.
It was starting to get dark so I was going to head back to West Yellowstone for the night, but decided when I got to the intersection that I had time to see Tower Falls. I’m really happy that I did. This was one of the highlights of the park. I stayed there until dark and then headed back to town.
I did get to see a bunch of bison this time. Last time I was out I don’t think I saw any wildlife. I also saw a few deer. There was a huge buck that was right next to a person in a car that had pulled over. I was surprised that I didn’t see any elk as its mating season and they are usually everywhere.
