Today was the day to explore San Antonio. I headed toward downtown and went to eat at the Tower of the Americas. I looked at the menu online and saw that it was expensive, but there was a burger on there that wasn’t too badly priced. The restaurant, bar, and observation decks were at the very top. When I got seated and looked at the menu I was a bit surprised to see that everything was $20 and up. I splurged and got the swordfish and clam chowder. I ended up having a $50 lunch… The food was great and the atmosphere was awesome. The restaurant rotated around so you got to see the whole city. It was a neat and spendy experience.
After lunch I walked by the Institute of Texan Cultures on my way downtown.
I made my way over to the Alamo next. It was pretty interesting. There were dioramas of what the church and fort looked like over the years.
I went to check out the river walk next. On my way over there I saw some neat buildings and a sculpture of Teddy Roosevelt. The river walk was nice. There were some nice spots along the way. The North bend was where all the bars and restaurants were. It was starting to pick up by the time I got over there. I stopped by the Hard Rock to get a pin and continued all the way around the loop. I stopped at Main Plaza to get a pic of the San Fernando Cathedral and District Court building. A little farther North was the old Spanish Governors Palace. When it started to get dark I went back to the van to put pants on so I could hit the town.
Earlier in the day I talked to a guy that was really interested in my van and he told me about this event called “First Friday.” I guess it happens every month on the first Friday and consists of pop up shops, street vendors, DJ’s, bands, art installations, and lots of people on Alamo street in the Art District. I walked the whole thing, got a beer at Blue Star Brewing Company, Dorcol Distilling+ Brewing, and Kunstler Brewing. I hung out at Kunstler until about 12:30. The beer was really good and the beertender was really nice.
